The Problem

South Africa is sinking. Literally.

The Automobile Association estimates over 25 million potholes nationwide — and 67% formed in just the past five years. Municipalities are bankrupt. Tenders are captured. Repairs, when they happen, often fail within months.

Citizens absorb the cost: R650 million in vehicle damage in 2021 alone, with the average pothole insurance claim ringing in at R20,000–R25,000. SANRAL has paid out only R15 million in compensation across two years — a rounding error against the real damage.

What goes wrong today

  • 1

    You report. Nothing happens.

Reports vanish into bureaucratic queues with no public record or accountability.

  • 2

    Funds are misallocated.

Budgets are diverted, inflated, or captured by connected vendors. No public audit trail.

  • 3

    Repairs fail in months.

Poor workmanship, no enforcement, no consequences. Potholes return — bigger.

  • 4

    You pay for it.

Tyres, rims, suspension, insurance excess — the public absorbs every cent of the failure.

How it works

From report to repair — on-chain.

Every pothole becomes a smart contract. Every cent is traceable. Every step is verifiable by anyone, anywhere — forever.

  1. 01

    Citizens Report

Upload photos, video, GPS, description, and an estimated repair cost via the app.

  2. 02

    AI Validates

An AI agent reviews the evidence, classifies severity, and produces an independent cost estimate.

  3. 03

    Contract Deploys

A smart contract is published to the marketplace. Vendors bid; the public funds it via our registered PBO — every donation is tax-deductible.

  4. 04

    Vendor Awarded

Awarded by transparent on-chain rules: price, vendor rating, response time, location.

  5. 05

    Repair & Release

Vendor uploads proof. Reporter confirms. The contract auto-releases funds. Done.

🤖

AI-priced

Removes vendor over-quoting and citizen guesswork.

🔗

Escrow-protected

Funds live in the contract — not in any politician's hands.

Dual-approval payout

Vendor proof + reporter sign-off required to release funds.

🧾

Tax-deductible

Donations flow through a registered PBO. Section 18A certificates land in your inbox automatically.

Why AI + Blockchain

A system that can't be corrupted.

We don't replace government — we route around the bottlenecks that have failed for thirty years. Public funds. Public ledger. Public accountability.

🔍

Radical transparency

Every report, bid, payment, and approval is written to a public ledger. No back-rooms. No edits. Anyone can audit any contract, anytime.

⚖️

Tamper-proof accountability

Funds can't be diverted — they're locked in code until verifiable proof of repair is submitted and confirmed. The contract enforces the rules, not a department.

AI-driven efficiency

AI estimates costs, ranks vendor proposals, flags fraud patterns, and routes jobs in seconds — collapsing months of municipal process into hours.

Old way
  • Reports vanish in queues
  • Tenders captured by connected vendors
  • No audit trail of public funds
  • Poor workmanship, no consequences
SmartPotholes
  • Every report is timestamped on-chain
  • Open bidding, fair on-chain awarding
  • Every rand traceable in real time
  • Dual-approval before any payout
The investment opportunity

Own the network that fixes South Africa.

A small percentage of every repair contract flows to the platform treasury — and that treasury is owned by token holders. As SmartPotholes scales from one pothole to millions, that revenue stream scales with it. Early ICO holders own a percentage stake in the entire network.

01

Real revenue

Every successful repair pays a platform fee. Not speculative emissions — actual revenue from real-world activity, settled in stablecoins.

02

Massive market

25 million potholes in SA alone — and the model exports to every emerging market with a road maintenance crisis. The TAM is the road network of the developing world.

03

Visible impact

Token holders aren't just speculating — they own a network that visibly improves the country every day. Every fixed pothole is a marketing asset.

How holders earn

A simple, transparent flywheel — encoded in smart contracts, not promises.

01

Repair contract executes. Funds are released to the vendor on dual approval.

02

Platform fee retained. A pre-defined % of every contract is routed to the protocol treasury.

03

Treasury distributes. Treasury revenue flows to token holders via staking rewards and buyback-and-burn mechanics.

04

You compound. Hold to earn from network growth. Stake to amplify. Vote on protocol changes.

Why early matters

Ground-floor pricing.

ICO participants buy in before the platform demonstrates scale. As repair volume grows, treasury revenue grows — and so does the value of every token in circulation.

  • Priority allocation for waitlist members
  • Lower entry price than public sale
  • Governance rights from day one
  • Whitepaper drops first to waitlist

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is SmartPotholes a government project?
No. SmartPotholes is an independent, decentralized platform. We're building infrastructure that operates parallel to government — not as a replacement, but as an accountable alternative for citizens, vendors, and funders who are tired of waiting.
How does SmartPotholes prevent corruption?
Three layers: (1) every report, bid, and payment is recorded immutably on a public blockchain; (2) funds are held in smart contracts that release only on dual approval — vendor proof and reporter confirmation; (3) AI-driven cost estimation prevents both citizen guesswork and vendor over-quoting.
Who funds the actual repairs?
Anyone can. The public, businesses, insurers, residents' associations — donations are received by SmartPotholes' registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) and flow into the smart contract for each pothole. Funds stay locked in the contract until the repair is verified, and donors get full on-chain traceability of where their money goes.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. SmartPotholes operates a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) with SARS-approved Section 18A status. Every donation is processed by the PBO, which issues you a Section 18A tax-deduction certificate automatically — straight to your inbox. You can claim donations against your taxable income up to the SARS-prescribed limit (currently 10% of taxable income).
How do investors earn a return?
A small percentage of every repair contract flows to the protocol treasury. Treasury revenue is distributed to token holders through staking rewards and buyback-and-burn mechanics. Returns scale directly with repair volume on the network.
How are vendors selected and held accountable?
Vendors complete a formal approval process before being listed. Job awards are made by transparent on-chain rules combining price, location, response time, and verified reputation. Poor performance is reflected immediately in the on-chain reputation score.
When will the ICO open?
ICO timing, token allocation, supply and pricing will be announced in the upcoming whitepaper. Joining the waitlist guarantees you first access — including priority allocation and whitepaper access ahead of public release.
Is this legal in South Africa?
The platform is being built in alignment with South African regulatory expectations. Token sale specifics, jurisdictional restrictions, and compliance frameworks will be detailed in the whitepaper. Nothing on this page constitutes a financial offer.
What blockchain does SmartPotholes run on?
Final chain selection will be confirmed in the whitepaper. Our criteria: low transaction fees, strong smart-contract tooling, sufficient throughput for thousands of contracts per day, and credible decentralization. Public Ethereum-compatible L2s are the leading candidates.
